History
Gauhati University was established on 26 January, 1948 by an Act of 1947.The University started functioning in a few temporary buildings in Guwahati. K.K.Handiqui was the first Vice-Chancellor. Phanidhar Dutta was selected as the Registrar, Sailandhar Rajkhowa and Sarat Kumar Dutta , Treasurer and Secretary of University Classes respectively. The Universitty started with 17 affiliated colleges and 8 Post Graduate Departments in 1948. . At present the chancellor is His Excellency, the Governor of Assam and the vice-president is Dr. Amarjyoti Chaudhary .

Gauhati University is the first University of the North-east India.It is premier university of the region with courses and studies in almost every field of modern education.It is a very famous university worlldwide with students all over the country as well as from various countries like U.S.A,U.K, Philippines, China, HongKong etc come here to pursue various studies each year. The university has a rich heritage which is very close to the heartthrob of the people of Assam.
The University is located on the western part(Jalukbari) of the gateway city of north-east, Guwahati (Kamrup district).The University campus is very scenic with small hillocks in the western part of the campus and the mighty Brahmaputra flowing nearby its northern part. Gauhati University is 10 km from the Borjhar International Airport (the major airport of Assam).It is 5 km from Kamakhya Railway Station through which all the major trains of the north-east passes. The university is 10 km from Guwahati city Railway Station where you can board all the trains to go to any part of the country and there are several bus stops in the campus that can take you to any part of the city. The capital city of Dispur is 22 km away from the University campus..The campus has developed into a township named “Gopinath Bordoloi Nagar”. The University campus has all necessary civic amenities such as health service, water supply, street lighting, internal roads, guest house, Post and Telegraph office, a branch of State Bank of India, canteens, a market, parks, playgrounds, auditorium, indoor stadium etc.Almost 3000 students resides in the university in almost 22 students hostels and the university has residential quarters for the teachers as well the employees.

At present Gauhati University has 183 affiliated colleges and is recognised by UGC (University Grants Commissions).It is a four star university rating by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Recently the university reached its 60 years of its establishment and a week long celebration programme is being declared on the eve of the occasion. It was the second oldest university in the eastern university after Calcutta University. The university has always aimed at developing the intellect and State of Assam and that of the Country. In the last 60 years of the wonderful journey in providing high quality education to the people of the region, the university has achieved a lot into educating the backward section of the people of the region.
